What are calories?

What are calories?

Understanding what calories is very important when starting a healthy lifestyle. An average man needs around 2,500kcal (10,500kJ) a day to maintain a healthy body weight and for an average woman, the figure is around 2,000kcal (8,400kJ) a day. A simple definition of calories is the amount of energy measured in an item of food or drink. However, two-thirds of the public at fast-food restaurants underestimate their calorie intake often a mile of the right number of calories, shown in a recent study published in the journal BMJ has found.

Facts on Calories you didn’t know.

  • The word “calorie” came into general use in English in the 1880s, according to the Oxford English Dictionary.
  • Kissing burns 2 calories per minute.
  • Foods with Negative Calories. The idea here is that your body burns more calories in digesting certain foods, like celery, than the foods provide. Well that’s wrong.
  • The average deep-fried mars bar contains almost 1,000 calories – that could be most of your daily allowance.
  • The Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps eats 12,000 calories per day whilst training.
  • Eating a high-calorie diet when pregnant is linked to giving birth to boys rather than girls.
  • There are no calories in tea or coffee (just in the milk and sugar that you add) (http://www.theofficediet.com/calorie-facts/)

Calculate how many calories you need.

To do this firstly we would need to get our height (in cm), weight (in kg) and our age. So now were ready to calculate our BMR (basal metabolic rate) which will help us plan our error-free diet and reach our goals. BMR is basically how many calories we use up when were resting and not doing anything, so once we start doing activities we can workout how many calories we should be taking in per day. When you find your BMR and daily calorie intake you can now start planning your diet and making it specific to your aims/goals. For instance, if your main objective this year is to lose weight than you can amend your diet to be around 400-600 calories below your original calorie intake result you got from the BMR calculations this would result in a weight loss of around 1lbs per week
